14% Heifer Cake MGA-0.20 is a medicated range feed containing 0.20 grams/ton of Melengestrol Acetate (MGA). It is used to suppress estrus (heat) in heifers intended for reproduction and as a tool for synchronizing estrous in heifers prior to breeding. The commonly used protocol for synchronizing heifers consists of feeding 14% Heifer Cake MGA-0.20 at the daily rate of 5.0 pounds/head for 14 consecutive days followed by a timed prostaglandin injection, heat detection and AI breeding. The timing of the MGA feeding, prostaglandin injection, heat detection and breeding is critical and should be done under the supervision of a veterinarian. For this synchronization protocol to be successful, it is important that heifers consume the recommended amount of 14% Heifer Cake MGA-0.20 consistently each day during the 14-day feeding period. No other supplemental feed should be fed while feeding 14% Heifer Cake MGA-0.20.
